May is National Water Safety Month!
Published on  Updated on

May is National Water Safety Month, and at Pool Connect, we’re all about helping families create backyard spaces that are both beautiful and safe. While we specialize in building and servicing your outdoor oasis, we also know that owning a pool means taking water safety seriously.

Whether you're new to pool ownership or prepping for another summer of fun, now’s the time to review the basics and share them with your family. Safety starts with awareness—and it’s something every pool owner should prioritize.

Water Safety Tips for Families with Kids

  • Always have adult supervision. Accidents can happen in seconds. Never allow children to swim unsupervised, even if they’re confident swimmers.

  • Set pool rules early. Simple rules like no running, no diving in shallow areas, and no swimming without permission go a long way in preventing injuries.

  • Get swim lessons. Contact your local aquatic center or Red Cross for swim and water safety classes for children of all ages.

  • Teach pool boundaries. Make sure kids understand they shouldn’t enter the pool area without an adult, even if the pool looks calm and inviting.

  • Don’t skip sunscreen. Keep SPF 30 or higher on hand and reapply throughout the day—especially after swimming or sweating.

Poolside Safety for Pets

  • Know your pet’s limits. Not all dogs (or other animals) are strong swimmers. Watch them closely around the pool, especially during hot days when they might jump in to cool off.

  • Help them find the exit. If your pet does enjoy the water, teach them how to safely exit using steps or a pet-friendly ramp.

  • Secure the pool area. A secured space ensures your pets stay safe when you're not outside with them.

Smart Sun Safety

Spending time poolside means more exposure to the sun’s rays. Here’s how to stay protected:

  • Apply and reapply sunscreen. Go with SPF 30+ and make it a habit every couple of hours.

  • Dress for protection. Consider rash guards, wide-brimmed hats, and sunglasses when you're spending long stretches outside.

  • Check the UV index. On high UV days, try to limit pool time during peak sun hours (10 AM–4 PM).

Safety First, Fun Always

At Pool Connect, we don’t just install pools—we help you build the backyard of your dreams. That dream starts with peace of mind. This Water Safety Month, take a few moments to review safety basics, talk to your family, and enjoy your oasis with confidence.
